304 vs 316 Stainless Steel

When it comes to stainless steel railings, there are two grades of stainless steel that are usually used:Grade 304 and Grade 316. How do you choose between Grade 304 and Grade 316? What's the difference between them?

In appearance, the two grade stainless steel are very similar , as well as in their chemical construction and properties. Both them are known for their durability and boast exceptional corrosion and rust resistance.

The key difference between them is that stainless steel grade 316 has added molybdenum, an alloy that greatly improves corrosion resistance, especially in environments with more brine or chlorine exposure.

Stainless steel grade 304 is prized the world due to its versatility and corrosion resistance, as well as being a low-cost alternative. 304 stainless steel is affordable and will work in most railing application, especially indoor railing projects.

Compared with the Stainless steel grade 304, the Stainless steel grade 316 will offer benefits such as higher level of corrosion resistance and resistance to chlorine. And it is suitable for marine environments because of the molybdenum.

Stainless steel grade 316 is more expensive than the stainless steel grade 304, but the extra cost is well worth the spend because 316 will outperform 304 and last many years longer.
